Niall gets his Instructors!

Posted 15 Oct 2011 @ 15:36

Congratulatons to Niall Versey, who on Sunday 2nd October 2011 passed his Open Water Scuba Instructors (OWSI) exams at Vobster Quay, in Somerset. Niall is a key member of the Galaxsea Divers team and you will often find him at our centre repairing and servicing equipment, or on one of our regular trips.  Niall first became an Open Water Diver in April 2008.  He then got the diving bug and worked hard to work his way up Master Scuba Diver. Still with the diving bug, Niall decided he wanted to be professional and worked hard to acheive his Divemaster certification in March 2010, followed shortly by his Assistant Instructors certification in October 2010. As an Open Water Instructor, Niall looks forward to introducing people to the brilliant world of diving and guiding them every step of the way. WELL DONE NIALL!

RNLI Sea safety Talk at Galaxsea

Posted 18 Jun 2011 @ 15:55

On Saturday 18th June, we were delighted to have Terry from the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) come along to Galaxsea Divers to do a talk on Sea Safety. This talk covered topics such as the six RNLI tips for safe trips, equipment, training, sos, tides and weather, plus the history of and about the RNLI.
??

We have the RNLI Sea Safety complete guide here at the shop, and Terry is doing a second talk for us on Sea Safety  Thursday 28th July 6pm - 9pm, if you are interested in coming along, please let us know. This is a brilliant talk for anyone who goes on boats or swims in the sea, and with Terry's enthusiasm, expereince and knowledge, you will get a great insight into the RNLI and Sea Safety. The talk is free, all we ask is for a donation that goes towards the RNLI charity. For more information on the RNLI please visit their website. Thanks to those who attended todays meeting.

Customer comments from June's meeting;

"This was a very informative interesting talk, with lots of helpful hints and I learnt things that I should have known as a diver" (Anon)

"Really enjoyed todays RNLI Sea Safety talk, it was informative and good to know. Thank you Galaxsea and Terry." (Jon C)

"Next time I go on a boat, I shall definetley be checking the performance of the lifejackets, will also ensure mine is ready to use and suitable. Plus now I know what to look for when using chartered boats. :) " (Theresa S)

Galaxsea Divers hit Truk Lagoon

Posted 05 Feb 2011 @ 10:04

On the 4th January 2011, a Galaxsea Diver troop of people led by Steve, left the UK for what they describe as some of the best diving of their lives.

Flying out from London and making a pit spot in Tokoyo for a day of sights and culture, the group then had 2 days diving of the coast of the small island of Guam, found in Western South Pacific. Diving with MDA diving services, dives included  Drift Dives, planes, ship wrecks, and a wide choice of reefs including a chance to visit the most popular sites; the Blue Hole, Coral Gardens, Barracuda Rock and the twin shipwrecks of the Tokai Maru and the SMS Cormoran.

After the lovely diving of Guam, the group boared the beautiful Truk Odyssey Liveaboard for 7 days diving around Truk Lagoon, this mystical o-ring shaped lagoon provides some of the best worldwide wreck diving. During the second world war Truk Lagoon was a hideaway for the Japanese Imperial Fleet, until 1944 when the Americalns flew in and bombed the fleet. Today Truk Lagoon has more than 60 WWII wrecks resting across 77 square miles of the sea floor encrusted with over 300 types of soft and hard corals flaunting their colourful display and a wide variety of sea life. Spoilt for choice is what one customer said.

Truk lagoon first became famous in 1971 when his team and himself broadcasted the first images of the wrecks and reefs in Truk Lagoon. Since then divers have visited Truk lagoon to see the treasure trove that Jacques broadcasted.

The water was warm, the visibility was clear and there was a vast biodiversity that smothered the deck. Occasional sharks and rays accompany over 250 species of reef fish.

 With a fascinating history, healthy marine life and a large concentration of wrecks, diving in Truk lagoon is something this group of divers will never forget.
