AWARE Fish Identification
Have you ever asked yourself, "What was that?”
The PADI Project AWARE Fish Identification Specialty course provides you with the fish identification basics so that next time, you know the answer.
During two dives you gain hands-on experience in looking for and identifying the fascinating fish you see underwater. You can learn more about Project AWARE by going to www.projectaware.org.
What do I need to start?
You need to be at least 10 years old and certified as a PADI Open Water Diver, PADI Junior Open Water Diver or hold a qualifying certification from another organisation. You will also need to complete the following forms:
• PADI Statement of Risks and Liability
• PADI/RSTC Medical Statement
• PADI Standard Safe Diving Practices
What will I do?
This course covers the knowledge, skills and techniques for identifying fish common to the local area including the following:
• The Project AWARE philosophy about protecting wporldwide aquatic ecosystems.
• Fish family groupings and common characteristics of fish speciesfound in the local area.
• Fish surveying techniques and strategies for collecting valid data
• The planning, organization and procedures for identifying fish families and species while diving.
• Two open water training dives.
How long will it take?
PADI programs are performance based. However, you can expect to complete the two dives in one day.

Where can I go from here?
As an AWARE Fish Identification Diver you can enrol on the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course or continue your education through the wide variety of PADI specialty courses. This certification also counts toward the PADI Master Scuba Diver rating.
