On Site Neurological Assessment for Divers
Scuba diving subjects the body to carrying out physiological processes under the pressures associated with descending under water.
The commonly known physiological stress is the bends, which is a type of decompression illness. Around two-thirds of divers suffering decompression illness have damaged their nervous system. The signs can be hard to spot, even by the diver, which could mean symptoms are ignored or blamed on some other cause.
Join Galaxsea Divers on the DAN On-site Neurological Assessment for Divers course to learn how to identify such symptoms and how to report them to the emergency services.
Only medical professionals should diagnose medical conditions, but the information you gather while performing a neurological assessment will be useful to help understand the extent of the injury and how it has changed in the time it took to get the diver from the dive site to medical care.
What do I need to start?
Prospective candidates will need to have completed the DAN Oxygen First Aid for Scuba Diving Injuries course within the past two years.
What will I do?
The DAN On-site Neurological Assessment for Divers course consists of knowledge development, skills development and assessment.
Your instructor will refresh your knowledge of the warning signs of a dive emergency and teach you to identify when it is appropriate to conduct an on-site neurological assessment. You will then practise such an assessment until you feel confident and competent in your skills.
By the end of this course you will be able to:
• understand and identify common warning signs of decompression illness.
• investigate the diver’s dive history to determine when it is appropriate to conduct a complete on-site neurological assessment.
• use an on-site neurological assessment slate to conduct a complete on-site neurological assessment.
How long will it take?
The course is scheduled to last for three hours but your instructor will work with you for as long as needed for you to feel confident and competent in your skills.
